A 75-metre vessel described as a “green pioneer” docked in Antigua over the weekend, showcasing what developers say is the world’s first ship powered by ammonia fuel with no carbon emissions.

The vessel, on a global tour, is demonstrating the use of green ammonia as a dual fuel alternative to heavy fuel oil, liquefied natural gas and non-green methanol.

Company representatives said the ship’s visit comes as the International Maritime Organization moves to finalize stricter greenhouse gas standards aimed at achieving net-zero emissions from international shipping by 2050.

The vessel arrived from Trinidad at the invitation of Port Manager Darwin Telemach, who has been in discussions with its operators for more than a year. Antigua was selected as a strategic stop because of its work in port electrification and its interest in expanding green fuel infrastructure as part of long-term development plans.

Government officials said the Prime Minister quickly approved the visit, noting that shipping plays a critical role in the country’s economy and survival. They added that Antigua and Barbuda intends to participate actively in the global transition toward cleaner maritime operations.

The ship will continue its international tour, while local authorities explore how emerging fuel technologies could shape the future of the nation’s ports.
