Member of Parliament for St. John’s Rural South Daryll Matthew has condemned continued illegal dumping in the constituency, describing the situation as “extremely frustrating and simply unacceptable.”

In a Facebook post, Matthew said daily efforts have been made over the past five years to clean and beautify Rural South, but people continue to indiscriminately dump garbage along roadsides and within communities.

“Our cleanup teams cannot be everywhere, and no amount of public expenditure can keep pace with this level of irresponsibility,” Matthew said.

He said maintaining a clean constituency requires residents to play their part and urged people to dispose of waste properly and report instances of illegal dumping when they witness them.

Matthew also called on residents to take greater pride in their communities and show consideration for their neighbours, the environment and workers responsible for cleaning up illegally discarded waste.

“We can—and must—do better. Keeping Rural South clean is everyone’s responsibility,” Matthew said.

The post was accompanied by photographs showing piles of discarded material along roadsides in the constituency.
