King Charles III Speaking at CHOGM Opening Ceremony
BBC
– The King addresses the slave trade in a speech to Commonwealth leaders, saying this “shameful chapter of history is one that fills my heart with horror”
He was formally opening the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm) in Antigua and Barbuda
The powerful words from the King were careful and considered – but he stopped short of a direct apology, our senior royal correspondent writes
The King also outlines what he describes as the “crisis of our time”, citing “brutal conflicts” facing the world, the “catastrophic reality” of climate change and the “dizzying speed” at which technology is transforming societies
PM Andy Burnham is also at the summit – as part of talks with fellow leaders, he’s expected to set out plans for a “debt reset” to support Commonwealth countries dealing with the growing cost of paying interest
The Commonwealth leaders’ summit is held every two years and allows leaders and representatives of the 56 nations to discuss the future of the partnership
