Prime Minister Gaston Browne says restitution is often a better approach than lengthy and costly corruption investigations that yield little financial recovery for the state.

Speaking on his weekly radio program, Browne argued that in many cases, “people are guilty and you can’t find them guilty in the court of law,” resulting in years of legal delays and millions spent on probes.

He cited past cases, including one involving former government figures, which he said demonstrated how investigations can drag on without producing convictions or returning funds to the public purse.

“If we can get these people to cooperate and they decide to provide restitution with the understanding that there’s no repeat, I think it’s a win-win for everybody,” Browne said. “We recover a few million dollars… it’s less money that we probably have to pay them.”

The Prime Minister added that his comments were not limited to any one case, noting that corruption and misuse of public funds have spanned administrations.
