The government has introduced a new low-cost home model priced at approximately EC$130,000 , marking the first phase of a broader push to expand affordable housing options across the country.
Housing Minister Maria Bird-Browne detailed the initiative during the Budget Debate, presenting one of the planned designs — The Argenta , a compact two-bedroom home listed at EC$131,500. The model features one bathroom and a 500-square-foot layout aimed at first-time homeowners and lower-income earners.
The minister said the affordable models are intended to give young families and working Antiguans a realistic path to homeownership at a time when private construction costs have priced many out of the market.
The new units are part of the government’s wider housing programme, which is expected to include several standardized models delivered through the Ministry of Housing and Works. During her contribution to the debate, Bird-Browne said the homes would be built using cost-efficient methods to keep prices stable while maintaining structural quality.
The unveiling of the Argenta marks the first of the new designs to be shown publicly, with additional models expected to follow as the ministry finalizes its rollout schedule.
The government says construction sites for the programme will be identified in several constituencies, with further details to be announced in the coming weeks.
