A small craft advisory is in effect for Antigua and Barbuda as hazardous marine conditions continue to affect mainly the Atlantic-facing waters of the islands.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services said the advisory, issued at 10:50 p.m. Friday, will remain in effect through Sunday. A small craft advisory is also expected to take effect for Anguilla on Saturday night.

According to the advisory, fresh winds are producing a combination of wind waves and swells capable of creating dangerous conditions, particularly in open waters extending up to 20 nautical miles from the islands.

Winds over open waters are forecast from the east-northeast at 22 to 37 km/h, or 12 to 20 knots, with strong gusts reaching about 56 km/h, or 30 knots.

Significant wave heights are expected to range from 1.5 to 2.4 metres, or 5 to 8 feet, with seas occasionally or locally reaching around 3 metres, or 10 feet.

The Met Office warned that the conditions could result in injuries or loss of life at sea, damage or loss of vessels and marine equipment, disruption to fisheries and marine transportation, and financial losses.

Inexperienced mariners, particularly those operating smaller vessels, are being advised to avoid navigating in the hazardous conditions.

The latest national forecast also indicates seas of 6 to 8 feet as unsettled weather associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly approaches the area.
