Prime Minister Gaston Browne has warned that the Commonwealth’s credibility will depend on the results it delivers, urging member countries to turn commitments made at CHOGM 2026 into investment, opportunities and measurable progress.

Speaking at the closing reception at Nelson’s Dockyard on Wednesday, Browne said Antigua and Barbuda would use its Commonwealth chairmanship to maintain momentum and encourage practical action following the summit.

“The credibility of our Commonwealth will be measured not by the declarations that we adopt, but by the results that we deliver,” he said.

Browne called on governments, institutions and development partners to follow through on their commitments, saying the conclusion of the meeting marked the beginning of the work needed to deliver benefits for their populations.

“We must ensure that the priorities identified during our deliberations are translated into practical initiatives, strengthened partnerships, and measurable progress,” he said. “Our task now is to move decisively from dialogue to delivery.”

He said the Commonwealth possessed significant human talent, economic potential and institutional strength that should be used to mobilise investment, expand trade, create opportunities for young people and support sustainable development.

Partnerships, he argued, must have a clear purpose and produce tangible benefits.

Browne said the discussions had reinforced the need for countries to work together on challenges including climate change, debt vulnerabilities, economic resilience and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence.

No member state could effectively respond to those issues alone, he said.

The prime minister also urged a reassessment of how small states are viewed by lenders and investors, arguing that their vulnerabilities should not be mistaken for a lack of potential.

“We must challenge outdated perceptions of risk and work with international financial institutions, development partners, and the private sector to ensure that access to finance and investment reflects the opportunities and realities of our economies,” he said.

As Antigua and Barbuda assumes the Commonwealth chairmanship, Browne said the country would work with Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey, the Commonwealth Secretariat and member governments to advance the interests of all 56 member states.

He said that effort would focus on implementation and making the organisation more responsive to the needs of its members.

Browne also called for young people to experience the Commonwealth as a source of opportunity, innovation and hope.

Looking beyond the gathering, he said its legacy should be assessed through the progress that follows.

“Let it be remembered not simply for the conversations that we held, but for the progress we subsequently achieved,” he said.

“The deliberations may have concluded, but the real work of delivery now begins.”
