Air Quality Moderate
Antigua and Barbuda is experiencing its 34th notable surge of Saharan dust for 2026, prompting the Meteorological Service to issue a Level II air pollution alert as air quality deteriorates to moderate levels.
In an air quality bulletin issued Tuesday, November 3, the Meteorological Service said increased concentrations of fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5 and PM10, have reduced air quality across the country.
The conditions are expected to persist until Friday, November 6.
According to the bulletin, the air quality index is forecast to range between 51 and 80, placing conditions in the moderate category.
While the health risk remains low for most residents, meteorologists are urging people who are particularly sensitive to air pollution to exercise caution.
Those most at risk include people with asthma and other respiratory illnesses, individuals with heart disease, older adults and children.
The Meteorological Service said air quality remains generally acceptable, but certain pollutants could pose moderate health concerns for a small number of unusually sensitive individuals.
Active children and adults, along with people suffering from respiratory conditions, are being advised to limit prolonged outdoor physical activity while the dust remains in the atmosphere.
The service also warned that repeated exposure to poor air quality can have longer-term health consequences, even when immediate symptoms appear mild.
The latest dust event marks the 34th significant Saharan dust surge recorded in Antigua and Barbuda since the beginning of the year.
Residents are encouraged to monitor changing conditions and follow updates from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service through its official website, social media platforms and WhatsApp channel.
The current Level II alert is expected to remain relevant through Friday, although residents should continue monitoring official forecasts for any changes.
