Prime Minister Gaston Browne has received his seasonal influenza vaccine as the Ministry of Health in Antigua and Barbuda begins its annual flu vaccination campaign, with the government encouraging residents, particularly older people and other vulnerable groups, to get immunized.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant highlighted the prime minister’s vaccination during Thursday’s post-Cabinet media briefing, as officials discussed the importance of protecting the population against seasonal influenza.

The Ministry of Health has commenced its vaccination programme as part of ongoing efforts to reduce the spread of influenza and protect people who face a greater risk of developing serious complications from the virus.

Cabinet encouraged residents to take advantage of the vaccination campaign, particularly senior citizens and people whose health conditions make them more susceptible to severe illness.

Browne’s decision to receive the vaccine comes as the government seeks to promote public participation in the programme and reinforce the importance of preventive healthcare.

Seasonal influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause fever, coughing, sore throat, body aches, fatigue and other symptoms. Although many people recover without complications, the virus can cause serious illness, particularly among older adults, young children and people with underlying medical conditions.

Annual influenza vaccination is recommended because circulating influenza viruses can change from year to year, requiring updated vaccines to provide protection against the strains expected to circulate during each flu season.

Health authorities generally recommend vaccination as an important measure to reduce the risk of influenza-related illness, hospitalization and complications.

The government’s appeal comes as health officials continue efforts to encourage preventive healthcare and reduce the burden of respiratory illnesses on the country’s healthcare system.

The Ministry of Health has not announced specific vaccination targets or disclosed how many doses will be administered during the campaign.

Residents are encouraged to contact their nearest government health centre for information about vaccine availability and arrangements for receiving the seasonal flu shot.

Cabinet has emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable members of the population and encouraged eligible residents to participate in the vaccination programme.
