Anglican minister Pastor Christopher Roberts has urged members of the Antigua and Barbuda Cabinet to place truth, honesty and integrity above political convenience when making decisions and carrying out their responsibilities to the public.

Roberts delivered the message during the opening meditation at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, encouraging government ministers to remain guided by moral principles rather than choosing positions simply because they are politically advantageous.

His remarks were highlighted by Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant during Thursday’s post-Cabinet media briefing.

The clergyman’s message focused on the importance of principled leadership, particularly when public officials are confronted with difficult decisions that may carry political consequences.

Roberts cautioned against allowing political expediency to take precedence over honesty, emphasizing that those entrusted with leadership responsibilities must remain committed to doing what is right.

The meditation served as a reminder to Cabinet members that their responsibilities extend beyond political considerations and require a commitment to truthfulness, accountability and ethical conduct.

His appeal also underscored the importance of maintaining public confidence in government institutions through decisions grounded in integrity.

The message comes as Cabinet continues to address a range of national issues, including the cost of living, infrastructure development, housing and social assistance.

The opening meditation is a regular feature of Cabinet meetings in Antigua and Barbuda, with religious leaders invited to offer spiritual reflections and guidance before ministers begin their deliberations.

Roberts’ contribution placed particular emphasis on the moral responsibilities associated with public office and the need for leaders to uphold their principles even when doing so may be politically inconvenient.

The remarks were presented as spiritual guidance to Cabinet members rather than criticism of any specific government decision or minister.
